Volker Höck (1943–2025)

Volker Höck was born in Innsbruck on 20 June 1943 and grew up there and in Vienna. He graduated from high school in Vienna in 1961, military service 1961-1962, studied geology and petrography at the University of Vienna (1962-1967). Dissertation ‘A contribution to the geology of the area between Tuxer Joch and Olperer (Zillertal, Tyrol)’, supervisors: Christoph Exner and Eberhard Clar. Doctorate in July 1968.

From 15 November 1967 research assistant at the newly founded Institute of Geology and Palaeontology (University of Salzburg). 1968: University assistant. 1975: Habilitation in geology. 1980: Habilitation in Geology and Petrography and Associate University Professor of Geology and Petrography. 41 years at the University of Salzburg. Among other things, head of the Institute of Geology and Palaeontology and of Geosciences. Retired since 2008.

Correspondent of the Federal Geological Survey since 1989. Co-authorship on the map sheets (1:50,000) Gföhl (20) and Großglockner (153) as well as contributions to the 1991 workshop (Geology on the eastern edge of the Bohemian Massif in Lower Austria, focus on sheet 21 Horn, Eggenburg 16 - 20 September 1991).

Areas of specialisation: Geodynamics of mountains (Alps, Carpathians), petrology of metamorphites and ophiolites, mineralogy and petrology of ancient pottery. Numerous (inter)national research projects, establishment of laboratories (wet chemistry and electron beam microprobe), visiting professor in Poland, Romania, Czech Republic, Egypt and the USA.

Death on 16 March 2025 in Salzburg after a long and serious illness.
