Oil and natural gas statistics 2024

On Monday, May 19, 2025, the annual oil and gas statistics for Austria for the previous year will be presented as part of the energy resources presentation at GeoSphere Austria.

By summarizing global energy data from 2023, an international comparison will be possible. Other topics include the geological and technical background to industrial projects. As alternative uses of geothermal energy or depleted reservoirs as energy storage are becoming increasingly important, there is an overview of the current situation of deep and shallow geothermal energy in Austria and innovative projects from industry.

Production and proved reserves of hydrocarbons in Austria

In 2024, the production of crude oil (minus 0.3%) and natural gas (minus 1.6%) fell slightly in Austria compared to 2023. This production volume of crude oil corresponds to around six percent and that of natural gas to around 6.3 percent of Austrian consumption.

There was one economic discovery in Austria in 2024 in a new well. There were also four discoveries in side-track wells (borehole drilled from existing wells).

Assuming constant annual production in Austria, crude oil will be available in reservoirs for another 8.5 years and natural gas for another 11.4 years.

Worldwide, the production of crude oil continues to increase and natural gas (natural gas and associated gas) remains at a consistently high level.
