Earthquakes in April 2026

In April, two earthquakes were felt by the population in Austria. One epicenter was located in Lower Austria, and another in eastern Switzerland.

On April 10 at 11:20 a.m. CEST, a minor earthquake with a magnitude of 1.6 was recorded close to Semmering, Lower Austria (47.65°N, 15.82°E). It was slightly felt as a tremor and rumbling of the ground. The intensity was 3 on the 12-level European Macroseismic Scale (EMS-98).

In large parts of Vorarlberg, an earthquake originating in Switzerland was felt on April 26 at 4:24 a.m. CEST; its epicenter was located 5 km northwest of Sargans (47.08°N, 9.39°E). The magnitude was 3.8. It was felt by many people, ranging from faintly to distinctly. Buildings shook slightly and furniture moved. The intensity reached a maximum of 3 to 4 degrees (EMS-98) in Austria. The Seismological Service received 59 reports on this earthquake via the online reporting form and the QuakeWatch Austria app.

  • Degree 3 – Weak: The earthquake is felt indoors by a few. People at rest feel a swaying or light trembling. Hanging objects swing slightly.
  • Degree 4 – Largely observed: The earthquake is felt indoors by many and felt outdoors only by very few. A few people are awakened, the vibration is moderate, slight trembling of the building or room. Glasses, windows and doors rattle, light furniture shakes visibly.
