Earthquake in November 2024

Two earthquakes were felt in Austria in November. The epicentres were in Styria and Tyrol.

On 12 November at 12:11 CET, a clearly perceptible earthquake occurred in Styria, the epicentre of which was about 5 km northwest of Trofaiach (47.45°N, 14.94°E). Buildings were shaken and some people were frightened. The tremors were felt up to a maximum distance of 30 kilometres. With a magnitude of 3.1, the epicentre intensity reached 4 degrees on the 12-level European Macroseismic Scale (EMS-98).

At 00:00 CET on the night of 15 to 16 November, a magnitude 2.7 earthquake was located in the Stubai Alps, Tyrol (47.09°N, 11.36°E). It was felt weakly to clearly, most of the reports came from Neustift im Stubaital and Trins. The intensity reached 3 to 4 degrees on the EMS-98. Two quakes were already felt by the population in this region in October.

The Austrian Seismological Service would like to thank the population for their perception reports, which were used to determine the intensity of the earthquakes.

  • 2 Scarcely felt: Vibration is felt only by individual people at rest in houses, especially on upper floors of buildings.
  • 3 Weak : The vibration is weak and is felt indoors by a few people. People at rest feel swaying or light trembling. Noticeable shaking of many objects.
  • 4 Largely observed: The earthquake is felt indoors by many people, outdoors by few. A few people are awakened. The level of vibration is possibly frightening. Windows, doors and dishes rattle. Hanging objects swing. No damage to buildings.
