Curiosity regarding the origin of the ground we stand upon, and thus questions about the nature, origin and age of rocks and the history of the formation of the landscape, have always been part of human nature. This is especially true for children who often show more spontaneous interest in a simple stone than in the plants and animals of their natural environments.

People often try to fi nd answers to these questions in aspects of mythology, philosophy and theology. In “Rocky Austria” the geological development of our country is presented based on scientifi c data. This research was and is often motivated by practical interests such as the search for usable deposits of mineral resources or the provision of clean drinking water. Nevertheless, a cultural interest, at least for many people, is also associated with this need for knowledge: therefore the origin and development of the rocks and landscapes around us are explained herein using current scientifi c information in an understandable way.
