JACKY COOL CHECK
Effective measures to reduce urban heat islands based on impact modeling and stakeholder cooperation.
The project Jacky_cool_check, uses an innovative approach and explores and elaborates the necessary requirements for measures against Urban Heat Islands from a technical, urban planning and social point of view in the densely developed residential and business district of Jakomini (“Jacky”) in Graz. Basic assumption of the project approach was that public and private stakeholder groups are able to identify and use their own scope of action to set measures against Urban Heat Islands, if they are provided with prior technical information (“informed stakeholders”) and are supported by a targeted communication process.
The objectives of the project are validation of theoretic knowledge for the investigation of Urban Heat Islands and the quantitative effects of measures reducing heat stress as well as the establishment of a database that is of importance for future urban planning; methodologically innovative and integrated approach, replicable in other urban contexts; commitment by public and private „informed“ stakeholders to undertake measures in the testdistrict of Jakomini; and detailed concept for the implementation in a followup demonstration project.
The exploration project Jacky_cool_check could show where there are opportunities in the district of Jakomini (Graz) to set measures against Urban Heat Islands. The foundation was laid with the assessment of the potential to implement climate adaptation measures in a densely built environment in the district of Jakomini which was mainly based on climate models and the engagement of relevant local stakeholders.
